Intermittent web server connectivity

We’re seeing intermittent connectivity issues reaching our primary web servers (and related servers, including FTP). Our host is already addressing the issue, it appears to be datacenter wide, so we are monitoring and watching for an update.

Phishing targeting customers

We’ve recently become aware of a phishing scheme targeting our customers. Our domain registrations are provided through Tucows, Inc, and we’ve had reports from customers about fraudulent messages going out.

If you receive one of these messages, please delete it, do not follow any links and do not provide any information.

Feel free to contact our support department if you have any concerns.

Legitimate messages about reported abuse will always use our ticket system, and you’ll be able to view the ticket online. We will not ask you to visit a third party site for information.

An example message sent to our own address is below:

Dear Dave Warren,

The Domain Name HIREAHIT.COM have been suspended for violation of the TUCOWS, INC. Abuse Policy.

Multiple warnings were sent by TUCOWS, INC. Spam and Abuse Department to give you an opportunity to address the complaints we have received.

We did not receive a reply from you to these email warnings so we then attempted to contact you via telephone.

We had no choice but to suspend your domain name when you did not respond to our attempts to contact you.

Click here and download a copy of complaints we have received.

Please contact us for additional information regarding this notification.

Partial Webserver Outage

Due to all of the issues the web server has been experiencing lately, it’s currently partially off-line, and sites will experience various errors.

We’re in the process of deploying and restoring data to a new server with significantly more resources, based on modern hardware and an updated operating system, and we expect to return to full capacity shortly.

The billing system and customer portal has been deactivated in the mean time as it may inadvertently cause more issues than it solves.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience, please know that we’re working to address this problem as fast as humanly possible.

SSL 3.0 and older disabled

Effective immediately, all servers will no longer accept SSL 3.0. We have also shuffled our cyphers to prioritize cyphers that include Perfect Forward Secrecy

In general, this means that for HTTPS sites, clients running XP and Internet Explorer 6 will no longer be able to connect. Upgrading to a newer browser on XP, or upgrading to a supported, non-legacy operating system, will allow users to continue accessing HTTPS websites.

HTTP connections will not see any changes, and XP+IE6 users will still be able to access websites.

This change applies not only to web, but also email and other services which use encryption. If you still use XP and have only IE6 installed, you may experience difficulties checking email, if this is the case, please upgrade to a newer version of Internet Explorer as this will update your schannel encryption libraries and will allow your non-web browser services to connect.

As always, please contact support if you have any questions.

Mail server – Strong passwords required

Effective immediately, we have changed the rules for changing passwords for mail server accounts. In order to create an account, or change an existing account’s password, a password must meet the following criteria:

  • A minimum of 6 characters (longer is recommended)
  • Contain at least one upper case letter, lower case letter, and number.
  • Not contain the full name or mailbox.
  • Not match a list of very common/passwords.
  • Not match any of the passwords recently used by that account.

This will not affect accounts that already exist, even if you have a terribly weak password, you can continue using it for the moment. However, we will be starting to require password changes for accounts with extremely weak passwords, when this happens, you’ll be prompted to change your password on the next login.

If you have any questions, please contact support.
