push.boxcar.io broken again, still causing bounce messages

All mail addressed to @push.boxcar.io is, once again, bouncing. Unfortunately Boxcar’s SMTP servers are still misconfigured to return a “554 Transaction Failed. Too many connections” which causes bounce messages to be sent whenever a user using Boxcar’s services receives an email.

As a result, we have ceased delivery to this domain until such time as Boxcar gets their servers running again.

If anyone from boxcar reads this, please PLEASE fix your SMTP servers so that they return a proper SMTP code (might I suggest 421) to avoid the unneeded bounces.

Lastly, if anyone can recommend a useful alternative to Boxcar for sending notifications to iOS devices, please let me know and I’ll publish your recommendation.

Mail server errors – Resolved

We experienced an intermittent temporary failure issue on our primary mail server this morning.

The problem appears to have been caused by a problem with one of the antivirus engines we use. We currently use three separate virus detection engines to keep mail safe, one of these engines was reporting intermittent scanning failures.

The problem has now been resolved and mail should be flowing normally at this time.

Mail Server – Backlog resolved

The mail server is currently backlogged due to a compromised account. The user has been contacted and we are in the process of clearing the queues now but the backlog may take several hours to clear completely.

UPDATE: The problem has now been resolved. There was a compromised account that attempted to send a large number of messages and caused the queues to backlog. All held mail has now been delivered.

Upgraded billing and hosting management system

Mail Server – SMTP not responding this morning

For a few hours this morning the SMTP server was off-line, resulting in problems sending outbound mail and receiving mail.

We are currently investigating the cause, but in the mean time we have implemented a change that will automatically resolve this particular situation if it occurs again.

The mail server is currently off-line. We have contacted someone at the datacenter to investigate and will provide additional information as it becomes available.

UPDATE: The problem is now resolved. No mail was lost during the process and services should be restored at this time.

Certificate errors – Resolved, please read

We’ve had a number of reports about certificate errors on the mail server and have determined the problem is due to a misconfiguration on your mail client.

If you’re seeing issues, please open a support ticket and let us know what mail client you are using and we will work with you to resolve the problem.

Managed WordPress upgrade to 3.1

Managed WordPress users will notice their installation being upgraded to WordPress 3.1 today. This upgrade brings a number of minor changes including a new WordPress “admin bar” that will appear on your site when you’re logged in. Note that users will not see this admin bar, only administrators see the admin bar.

When you sign in to the administrative interface you will be prompted to upgrade your database, this happens automatically once you click the button and you’ll then be able to access the admin screens.

Also note that after the upgrade you’ll need to login again, if you were logged in before the upgrade you’ll be automatically logged out and prompted for your username and password to proceed.

We do not expect users to run into any problems as this upgrade has been thoroughly tested. Please contact us if you have any difficulties.

Mail Server maintanence

Please be advised that on January 18th, 2011 at 01:00-04:00 PST, we will be conducting network upgrades and maintenance which will impact our web server.

This maintenance will last approximately 5 hours, during which 4 brief periods of latency and packet loss will occur, as well as up to 5 minutes of network downtime as the switches involved are transitioned to the alternate distribution routers.

push.boxcar.io / iPhone push notification delivery problems (again)

We’re currently having a problem with delivering mail to the push.boxcar.io domain. This domain is used for push mail notifications for iPhone users, so as a result iPhone users may not receive timely notifications of new mail at this time.

Mail delivery to this domain is currently suspended since while their servers are refusing mail to avoid confusing errant bounces being generated.

Note that this has been an ongoing issue over the last few weeks and the problem may occur when not specifically mentioned here. Also note that the problem isn’t on our side, so unfortunately we don’t have any further information or an estimated time to resolution at this time.
